Flowers and Birds

PLEASE TREAD VERY GENTLY and do not pick any flowers, as these remnant flowers are scarce and precious.

ST. RONANS RESERVE

Coming from Perth on the Great Southern Highway after the 13 Mile Bridge turn left into Wambyn Road .  On your right you will come to ST. RONANS RESERVE (signposted) when you find a track leading in, like a firebreak, walk along this and see a variety of flowering plants and shrubs.  

MOKINE RESERVE

This probably has more flowers, so visit here rather than St. Ronan’s if you have limited time. Go along Wambyn Road , at about 4.5 km pass Boyercutty Rd on the right.  Continue for about 7km to a T junction which will be Leaver Road , turn right into this (heading to York ). The reserve is signposted and fenced. About half way along the reserve there is a locked gate, which has walking access. Enter here and a meandering track leads into the bush.

Wambyn Road, (about 1-2 kms along from the Perth/York road). Some of the of wildflowers that were in bloom are on the Left side of road - A mix of Silky blue orchids, white spider orchids, donkey orchids, green spider orchids, milkmaids, fringed lily. Right side of road - huge displays of blue leschenaultia, blue/purple dampiera, yellow/orange pea flowers, cowslip orchids, Donkey orchids, everlastings, white candle flowers, kangaroo paws, fringed lily flowers, running postman creeper. The place to find the unusual donkey orchids  is marked with a dead branch laid across the track.   

WALLABY HILLS RESERVE

There are many wildflowers both on the ground and in the bushes and shrubs along the tracks and further into the bush. These flowers have usually a short flowering period, and depending on the time of year different species are in bloom.

In Sept 2003 these flowers were seen on one day :Black Gin (kinga australis) Tall grass trees, Climbing Fringed Lily, Calytrix (in red and blue flowers), Yellow Hibertia, Rosy cheeked Donkey Orchids, Paper Lily (white), Pea Bush, Blue skill, Cowslip orchid, Dampiera, Dryandra, Mouse Ears, Pigmy Sundew, Sheoak (in flower)

Mt Observation, a list of some of the wildflowers that were in bloom as follows - cowslip Orchids, jug orchids, donkey orchids, green clubbed spider orchids, white trigger flowers, blue squill flowers, fringed lilly flowers, yellow/orange pea .
