Walk 1: Avon Terrace

1.5km walk

Most of the Avon Terrace Streetscape was designed and built between 1880 and 1910. It features shady covered pavements and buildings with ornamental parapets of stucco bearing the names of their original owners, on both sides of what was once a tree lined thoroughfare. At either end of the shopping area stand the large Hotels of the pioneer days: the York, Castle and Imperial. Clearly visible at the south end is the Town Hall and by crossing the road a better view is possible at the Court House, Post Office, and Edwards Building now the York & District Co-operative.While the buildings in Avon Terrace are originals there have been many changes. The little shops under the stucco facades which used to house numerous butchers, bankers, coach builders, saddlers and suppliers of paint have gone and been replaced by bookshops, arts and craft shops and restaurants. Similarly, sulkies and wagons have been replaced by the motor car. Cars were seen in York from quite early days, and some vintage specimens may be seen in the Motor Museum, once offices and shops.

Buildings of interest on the Heritage Trail Walk 1 are:

Troopers Cottage, The Post Office, Old Gaol, Courthouse and Police Station, Motor Museum, Castle Hotel, Sargent’s Pharmacy, Imperial Inn, Town Hall, Settlers House, York Hotel, Edwards Building, Western Australia Bank, Old Council Chambers, Union Bank, CWA House, Bank of Australasia, Holy Trinity Church, Holy Trinity Rectory
