Walk 4: The East Bank
6kms walk
Although settlement had commenced on the East Bank with the establishment of the convict hiring depot after 1851, the Avon River was often impassible in winter. It was not until Parkers and Mongers bridgers were built in 1861 that more of the settlement began to spill over onto the East Bank. Aspect and soil lent themselves to orchards and market gardening, and for this reason the blocks were larger and the buildings widely spaced.
Among the earliest buildings were the Angelican Church and Rectory and a row of pensioners cottages north of the church, of which one (Kairey Cottage) survives. Development quickened towards the end of the 19th century and some blocks were subdivided to acommodate surburban housing while the upper slopes were used for prestige housing overlooking the town. Along these quiet streets can be seen virtually every style of domestic architecture from 1853 to the present day.
Areas of interest on Heritage Walk 4 are:
Clifford Street, York Grammar School, Old York Hospital, Residency Museum, Laurelville, Pool Street, Kairey Cottage, Stone Cottages, Marwick Barn, Mt Brown Lookout, and York Cemetery.
